The answer is C. Emlyn Hughes. Here is the full story.

Emlyn Hughes and Liverpool's 1974 FA Cup Triumph

Emlyn Hughes lifted the FA Cup at Wembley on 4 May 1974, leading Liverpool to a commanding 3–0 victory over Newcastle United. It was one of the most one-sided finals of the decade, and Hughes — wearing the captain's armband with his trademark intensity — became the symbol of a Liverpool side that was rapidly establishing itself as the dominant force in English football.

The Man They Called "Crazy Horse"

Hughes earned his famous nickname for his all-action, barnstorming style of play. Signed by Bill Shankly from Blackpool in 1967 for £65,000, he went on to make over 650 appearances for the club across 13 years. He was the kind of player who brought infectious energy to every match — the sort of captain who dragged teams forward through sheer force of personality.

Shankly, who retired just weeks after that 1974 final, adored Hughes. He once described him as "a player who could play in any position and succeed." That flexibility, combined with his relentless drive, made him the natural leader of the dressing room and the perfect man to wear the armband.

The Final Itself

Newcastle arrived at Wembley with a decent squad, but Liverpool dismantled them with clinical efficiency. Kevin Keegan opened the scoring, Steve Heighway added the second, and a late Newcastle own goal completed the rout. The Geordie fans, many of whom had packed Wembley with high hopes, were left stunned by how thoroughly their side had been outplayed.

For Liverpool, it was their second FA Cup — their first had come in 1965 — and it signalled that the club were ready for even greater things under the incoming management of Bob Paisley.

A Legacy That Endures

Hughes went on to captain Liverpool to further glory, including First Division titles and European Cups. He also skippered England on numerous occasions, earning 62 international caps. When the Football Writers' Association named their Footballer of the Year in 1977, Hughes took the award — recognition from journalists who had watched him week in, week out.

He left Liverpool in 1979 for Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he won yet another League Cup, proving his hunger for silverware never dimmed. Later generations came to know him as a team captain on the long-running BBC panel show A Question of Sport, where his warmth and humour made him a household name well beyond football circles.

Emlyn Hughes passed away in November 2004 at the age of 57, following a brain tumour diagnosis. The tributes from across football were overwhelming. At Anfield, where he had given so much, he is remembered as one of the great captains the club has ever produced — the man who lifted the cup, and so much more.
