The Quiz Question
A 9-0 scoreline has been recorded four times in Premier League history. Which of these is NOT one of the four 9-0 wins?

The answer is C. Arsenal 9-0 Everton. Here is the full story.
The Premier League's Most Brutal Scorelines
Nine-nil. It's the kind of scoreline that makes you do a double-take. In a sport where 1-0 results are celebrated and 3-0 is considered a hammering, finishing a match with nine goals while conceding none is genuinely extraordinary. The Premier League has seen it happen four times — but an Arsenal demolition of Everton is not one of them.
The Real 9-0 Club
The first time the Premier League witnessed a 9-0 was back in March 1995, when Manchester United thrashed Ipswich Town at Old Trafford. Andy Cole was the star of the show, plundering five of the goals in a performance that remains one of the most ferocious individual displays the league has ever seen. Ipswich were already struggling that season and were relegated come May — that result didn't exactly help their confidence.
Then came a 24-year gap before it happened again. In October 2019, Leicester City destroyed Southampton 9-0 at St Mary's. Jamie Vardy helped himself to a hat-trick, and the Saints were simply overrun from start to finish. What makes that result even more remarkable is what came next.
Less than two years later, in February 2021, Southampton found themselves on the wrong end of another 9-0 — this time against Manchester United at Old Trafford. Becoming the first team in top-flight English history to lose two separate league games by a nine-goal margin is a grim record that Southampton supporters would very much like to forget.
The fourth and most recent 9-0 came in August 2022, when Liverpool dismantled Bournemouth at Anfield. The Cherries had just been promoted back to the Premier League and were given a very rough welcome. Roberto Firmino bagged a brace, and the result served as a statement of intent from Jürgen Klopp's side early in the season.
Why Arsenal vs Everton Never Made the List
Arsenal have put some heavy results on Everton over the years — including a 5-0 at Goodison Park in 2005 — but a 9-0 has never happened between these two clubs in the Premier League era. It's a plausible-sounding option precisely because big Arsenal wins over Everton aren't unheard of, which is exactly what makes it a clever decoy in a quiz.
The four genuine 9-0s share something in common beyond the scoreline: each one felt like a moment where one team simply ceased to compete. Whether through injuries, red cards, momentum, or sheer class, the losing side stopped being an opponent and became a training exercise.
A Record That May Not Stand Forever
With the pace, athleticism, and tactical sophistication of the modern Premier League, another 9-0 is always theoretically possible. On any given bad day, with the right combination of misfortune and mismatch, history could repeat itself. Somewhere out there, a manager is probably hoping it won't be on their watch.
