Step outside on a sunny day and your body quietly gets to work manufacturing one of its most essential nutrients. How the Process Actually Works
When ultraviolet B (UVB) rays from the sun hit your skin, they trigger a reaction with a cholesterol compound called 7-dehydrocholesterol, which is naturally present in the outer layers of your skin. That reaction converts it into a precursor molecule called pre-vitamin D3. Body heat then nudges that molecule into vitamin D3 itself.
But the job isn't finished there. Vitamin D3 travels through the bloodstream to the liver, where it gets converted into 25-hydroxyvitamin D — the form doctors measure in blood tests to check your levels. From there it heads to the kidneys, which perform one final chemical tweak to produce the fully active form, calcitriol, which your body can actually use.
What Vitamin D Actually Does
Vitamin D is best known for helping the body absorb calcium, which is why it's critical for building and maintaining strong bones. A severe deficiency in children causes rickets — a disease that was rampant in industrialized 19th-century cities where sunlight was scarce and smoggy. In adults, prolonged deficiency leads to osteomalacia, a softening of the bones that causes pain and weakness.
Beyond bones, vitamin D supports immune function, helps regulate mood, and plays a role in muscle health. Researchers are still exploring links between low vitamin D levels and conditions ranging from depression to cardiovascular disease, though the science on those fronts is still developing.
Why So Many People Are Deficient
Despite sunlight being free and widely available, vitamin D deficiency is surprisingly common — estimated to affect around 1 billion people worldwide. Modern indoor lifestyles, the use of high-SPF sunscreen, living at northern latitudes (where winter sun is too weak to trigger production), and having darker skin pigmentation — which naturally filters more UVB — all reduce how much vitamin D the body can synthesize.
Just 10 to 30 minutes of midday sun exposure on the arms and legs a few times a week is enough for many fair-skinned people to maintain adequate levels. But those who can't get enough sun often turn to dietary sources like fatty fish, egg yolks, and fortified foods, or take supplements.
