Why Venus Burns Hotter Than Mercury
Most people's first instinct is to say Mercury — it's the closest planet to the Sun, so it must be the hottest, right? Logical guess, but wrong. Venus, the second planet from the Sun, holds the title of hottest planet in our solar system, and it's not even close.
The surface temperature on Venus averages around 465°C (869°F) — hot enough to melt lead. Mercury, by comparison, peaks at about 430°C (800°F) on its sun-facing side, and plummets to -180°C (-290°F) on its dark side. Venus barely fluctuates at all. Day or night, pole or equator, it stays ferociously, consistently hot.
The Greenhouse Effect Gone Rogue
The reason comes down to Venus's atmosphere, which is one of the most extreme environments in the known solar system. It's composed of about 96% carbon dioxide, with clouds of sulfuric acid thrown in for good measure. This thick blanket of CO₂ traps heat from the Sun and prevents it from escaping — a runaway greenhouse effect on a planetary scale.
The atmospheric pressure on the Venusian surface is 92 times greater than Earth's — roughly equivalent to being 900 metres underwater here. Heat gets absorbed, trapped, and recycled endlessly. The planet essentially acts like a slow cooker with no off switch.
Mercury, meanwhile, has virtually no atmosphere. It can't hold onto heat. The moment the Sun isn't directly hitting a patch of its surface, temperatures collapse. No atmosphere means no insulation.
A Planet That Defied Expectations
Astronomers suspected Venus was hot, but the true scale of it shocked early space scientists. When the Soviet Venera probes began landing on Venus in the 1960s and 70s, the spacecraft were being crushed and fried within minutes — sometimes seconds — of touchdown. The Venera 13 lander lasted a record-breaking 127 minutes before the planet destroyed it. That's considered a success.
Venus and Earth are often called twin planets because they're similar in size and composition. But their atmospheres took wildly different paths billions of years ago. Some scientists believe Venus may once have had liquid water and conditions more hospitable to life. Then something — volcanic activity, a shift in solar radiation, or a slow accumulation of greenhouse gases — tipped it into the hellscape it is today.
