The Only Mammal That Truly Flies
Bats hold a genuinely unique place in the animal kingdom. Of the roughly 5,500 known mammal species on Earth, they are the only ones capable of powered, sustained flight — meaning they generate lift and thrust using their own muscle power, just like birds and insects do.
That distinction matters more than it might seem. Flying squirrels, colugos, and sugar gliders are often lumped into the same conversation, but none of them actually fly. They glide — falling at a controlled angle by stretching a membrane between their limbs. The moment they stop moving horizontally, they drop. Bats, by contrast, can climb, hover, bank sharply, and accelerate entirely under their own power.
Wings Built from Hands
A bat's wing is one of evolution's most remarkable structures. The scientific order name, Chiroptera, literally means "hand-wing" in Greek, and that's exactly what it is. The wing membrane — called a patagium — stretches across enormously elongated finger bones, connecting to the body and often down to the hind legs or tail. The underlying bone structure is recognisably similar to a human hand; bats essentially fly on webbed, stretched fingers.
This design gives bats exceptional aerobatic control. Research from institutions including Brown University has shown that bat wings can flex and adjust mid-flight at multiple points simultaneously, allowing for tighter turning radii than most birds can manage. Some species can pull off near-180-degree turns in the space of a few body lengths.
An Ancient and Successful Group
Bats are far from a niche evolutionary experiment. With over 1,400 described species, they represent roughly 20 percent of all known mammal species — second only to rodents in diversity. They inhabit every continent except Antarctica and have been around for at least 52 million years, with the fossil Onychonycteris finneyi providing some of the earliest evidence of a fully winged bat from the Eocene epoch.
They fill ecological roles that are difficult to overstate. A single little brown bat (Myotis lucifugus) can consume around 1,000 mosquito-sized insects in a single hour. Fruit bats are critical pollinators for plants including mangoes, bananas, and agave — the plant that gives us tequila. Without bats, entire ecosystems and agricultural systems would feel the strain.
Echolocation: The Secret Navigation System
Most bat species navigate and hunt using echolocation — emitting ultrasonic pulses and interpreting the returning echoes to build a precise acoustic picture of their surroundings. Some species can detect an object as thin as a human hair in complete darkness. It's a biological sonar system that engineers have studied for decades when designing everything from submarine detection to assistive technology for visually impaired people.
Flight is what makes bats famous, but it's only the beginning of what makes them extraordinary.
