Every green plant you've ever seen — from the moss on a garden wall to the towering sequoias of California — is quietly pulling carbon dioxide out of the air, day after day. It sounds almost too simple, but this single chemical exchange is the foundation of nearly every food chain on the planet.

How Photosynthesis Actually Works

Plants absorb CO₂ through tiny pores on their leaves called stomata — microscopic openings that can open and close depending on conditions like light and humidity. Once inside the leaf, carbon dioxide travels into cells packed with chloroplasts, the green organelles that contain chlorophyll.

Here, sunlight provides the energy to drive one of the most important chemical reactions in nature. The plant combines CO₂ from the air with water (H₂O) drawn up from the roots to produce glucose — a sugar it uses for energy and growth. Oxygen is released as a byproduct. That oxygen? It's what we breathe. Photosynthesis has been filling Earth's atmosphere with breathable air for roughly 2.7 billion years.

Why CO₂ Specifically?

Carbon dioxide is the plant's carbon source — and carbon is the backbone of all organic molecules. Fats, proteins, DNA, the cellulose in a tree trunk: all of it is built on carbon skeletons that ultimately trace back to CO₂ pulled from the air. This process is called carbon fixation, and it's the entry point for carbon entering the living world.

It's worth noting that plants do also take in oxygen — they respire just like we do, burning glucose for energy, especially at night when photosynthesis stops. But during daylight hours, photosynthesis runs far faster than respiration, so the net effect is CO₂ absorption and O₂ release.

The Bigger Picture: Plants and Climate

Because plants absorb CO₂, they act as natural carbon sinks. Forests, grasslands, and even ocean phytoplankton collectively absorb around 2.6 billion tonnes of carbon per year, according to NASA research — roughly a quarter of all human emissions. This is why deforestation makes climate change significantly worse: fewer trees means less CO₂ removed from the atmosphere.

Interestingly, elevated CO₂ levels can actually accelerate plant growth in some species — a phenomenon called the CO₂ fertilisation effect. But the benefits are complicated by associated changes in temperature, rainfall, and soil nutrients, so it's no silver bullet for climate concerns.
