Why Venus Burns Hotter Than Mercury — Even Though It's Farther from the Sun
At first glance, Mercury seems like it should hold the title. It's the closest planet to the Sun, baking in direct solar radiation with almost no atmosphere to shield it. Yet Venus, sitting roughly twice as far from the Sun, consistently reaches surface temperatures around 465°C (869°F) — hot enough to melt lead. Mercury, by comparison, tops out at about 430°C on its sun-facing side and plunges to –180°C on its dark side. Venus wins the heat trophy, and it's not even close.
The Greenhouse Effect Gone Rogue
The secret is Venus's atmosphere — a thick, suffocating blanket of carbon dioxide (CO₂) that makes up about 96% of what surrounds the planet. CO₂ is a greenhouse gas, meaning it traps heat that would otherwise radiate back out into space. On Earth, our modest greenhouse effect keeps us comfortably warm. On Venus, that same process has spiralled completely out of control.
Solar energy punches through the Venusian atmosphere and heats the surface. But when the surface tries to release that heat, the dense CO₂ layer acts like a one-way valve — letting energy in but refusing to let it out. The result is a runaway greenhouse effect that has been cooking the planet for billions of years.
Crushing Pressure, Toxic Clouds
The temperature misery doesn't stop there. The atmospheric pressure on Venus's surface is about 90 times greater than Earth's — equivalent to being nearly a kilometre underwater. Swirling above that hellish ground are clouds made not of water vapour but of sulfuric acid, stretching roughly 50–70 kilometres up into the sky.
The combination of extreme heat, crushing pressure, and corrosive clouds makes Venus one of the most hostile environments in the entire solar system. Every spacecraft humanity has landed there has been destroyed within a couple of hours. The Soviet Venera probes in the 1970s and 80s managed to send back a handful of images before succumbing to the conditions.
A Warning from Our Neighbour
Scientists study Venus partly as a cautionary tale. Venus and Earth are often called "twins" because they're similar in size, mass, and distance from the Sun. The prevailing theory is that Venus once had liquid water and a more temperate climate. Something — possibly volcanic activity releasing massive amounts of CO₂ — triggered its greenhouse spiral, and the planet never recovered.
That story resonates deeply with climate researchers today. Venus is essentially Earth's "what if" scenario — a planet where the greenhouse effect was never kept in check. Understanding how it got so extreme helps scientists model climate systems and underscores why atmospheric composition matters so much.
