When he's trying to impress a female, a different palette emerges, often featuring vivid blues and greens in patterns unique to his species. A female who isn't interested will signal her rejection with darker, muted tones — sometimes even a specific pattern that means "not happening."

Stress, submission, and contentment all have their own color signatures too. A chameleon basking in the morning sun will often darken significantly — darker pigmentation absorbs more solar radiation, helping it warm up faster. Once it reaches an optimal temperature, the skin may lighten again to avoid overheating.

So How Does the Color Change Actually Work?

For decades, scientists assumed chameleons changed color by moving pigment around in specialized skin cells called chromatophores. That's how many other color-changing animals work. But a landmark 2015 study from the University of Geneva revealed something more elegant in chameleons.

Beneath their outer skin layer, chameleons have a lattice of tiny crystals called iridophores. By relaxing or tensing the skin, they change the spacing between these crystals, which alters how light reflects off them — producing different colors without changing any pigment at all. Camouflage Is Almost a Side Effect
